About ATG

Mission Statement

American Theater Group produces new and classic works primarily by American playwrights with an emphasis on the development of new works and the rediscovery of undeservedly neglected older ones. ATG engages audiences by making theater’s glorious possibilities accessible to the diverse community in which we live, through remarkable performances as well as quality arts-in-education programming.

Core Values

  • Making Art with Heart
We believe that producing art with heart is only possible with passionate artists and engaged audience members.

  • Nurturing New Voices
ATG amplifies new and exciting voices - whether they be directors, actors, or playwrights - and by seeking to share and celebrate untold stories.

  • Daring to be Different
ATG thrives on pushing the artistic envelope with intense, intimate productions of powerful, heart-felt stories. We are adventurous, experimental, and innovative in our productions.

  • Cultivating the Community
A diverse, inclusive organization, we work to be an asset to our community, not only artistically, but also educationally and culturally. Our work engages people as audience members, performers, and participants in every way possible.

  • Educating the Next Generation
To ensure the long-term health of American Theater Group and theater in general, ATG trains the artists and audiences of tomorrow through its quality arts-in-education programming.

History / Future

A professional theater company, ATG was founded in 2012. Since its inception, ATG has become a “launching pad” for future both Off-Broadway and international productions and film projects, as well as a premiere resource for future leaders in the theater community.

Several of our world premiere productions and readings have gone on to healthy afterlives and accolades, both internationally and nationwide. Our 2019 world premiere production of Tell Them I’m Still Young starring Emmy-Award winning Andre Braugher and Tony-Award winning Michele Pawk received unanimous critical acclaim and played to packed houses every night.  Our world premiere production of Marry Harry was made into a motion picture after having opened Off-Broadway in 2017.  Following our world premiere production of Bubble Boy by the authors of the hit films Despicable Me and The Lorax, the show has been licensed for productions around the world, recently released a cast album, and was presented at the prestigious 54 Below in New York.  Our 2013 production of Himself and Nora opened off-Broadway in June of 2018, and our World Premiere musical Small Town Story was also presented at 54 Below shortly after appearing at ATG.

Looking ahead, ATG hopes to both increase the number of productions we put on each season and grow the number of students who participate in our educational outreach programming. We also look forward to broadening our audience base to better reflect the varied community we serve.
