Company Description: American Theater Group (ATG) produces new and classic works primarily by American playwrights, with an emphasis on the development of new works and the rediscovery of undeservedly neglected older ones. Our programming engages audiences by making theater's glorious possibilities accessible to the diverse community in which we live, through remarkable performances as well as quality arts-in-education programming. We connect New Jersey residents with exciting new theater created by local playwrights and artists, as well as with illustrious artists and shows from the cultural hub of New York City, right in their own backyards.
Each season, ATG produces two mainstage shows, typically one play and one musical. During months without a mainstage show, and subject to venue availability, ATG presents our Monday Night Play Reading Series, which helps to fulfill our mission by introducing audiences to new and seldom-heard works, often by emerging playwrights. A key component of ATG's annual programming and mission fulfillment is the development of new works, which is expressed both in our mainstage productions and reading series, as well as through a remarkably unique program, the ATG PlayLab. The ATG PlayLab is a professional development space dedicated to BIPOC and queer-identifying playwrights and, to our knowledge, is the only professional play development group centering BIPOC playwrights in the United States. Keeping with our goal of nurturing tomorrow's theater today, ATG also produces robust annual arts education programs spanning the areas of performance, playwriting, design, and opportunities for student interns to join us as backstage crew members and even on-stage in select mainstage productions.
ATG is currently in its 13th season, and produces in state-of-the-art venues including Somerset County's Mitchell and Ann Sieminski Theater, and Union County's Hamilton Stage at the Union County Performing Arts Center. Its board of directors includes an impressive array of diverse professionals from industries including the arts, finance, law, and education. Its staff includes the full-time Producing Artistic Director, a part-time Marketing Director, and additional contractors working in Graphic Design, Production Management, Ad Sales, and the Director of the ATG PlayLab program.
